FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – FWFD officials say that four cats are dead and two people were taken to the hospital following an overnight fire in a home just north of downtown in the Bloomingdale neighborhood, close to Wells Street.
Fort Wayne Fire Department crews responded just after midnight Friday to 423 W. Fourth St. and found smoke on the first floor of the home.
Two people had made it out of the home but needed medical attention. They were taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition. According to fire officials, four cats perished in the fire.
The fire was under control in around 20 minutes. The home suffered heavy smoke and fire damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
FWFD officials released the following:
Fort Wayne Firefighters were called to 423 W Fourth Street on a reported house fire. First units arrived on the scene in 2 minutes and found moderate fire conditions on the first floor of the home. 2 Occupants had self evacuated and were in need of medical assistance. TRAA EMS arrived shortly after FWFD units and transported 2 patients to a local hospital in serious but stable condition. There were 4 cats in the home and they all perished. The fire was under control in 21 minutes. The home suffered heavy fire and smoke damage. TRAA, I&M, NIPSCO and FWPD assisted at the scene. Crews remain on scene for overhaul of the home. The fire is currently under investigation.
