ALBION, Ind. (ADAMS) – Black Pine Animal Sanctuary has two new residents. The animal refuge announced on Tuesday that an African serval and a ring-tailed lemur are now among the over 75 animals living their best lives at Black Pine.
19-month-old Whiskey and two-year-old Mowgli were previously surrendered animals. They will now comfortably live out their lives at the animal refuge in Albion.
Black Pine released the following:
The animal population at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary continues to grow, with Whiskey, a 19-month-old African Serval, and Mowgli, a two-year-old ring-tailed lemur.
Whiskey is a surrendered pet from Michigan. According to Black Pine Animal Sanctuary CEO Trish Nichols, “There are hundreds of small exotic cats looking for homes.” Sadly, people do not research these animals before bringing them home. Once in the home, the animal’s natural behaviors, such as spraying, destructive play, and musky smell, kick in, and the owners don’t want to deal with these issues. Therefore, the animals either end up in a sanctuary or euthanized.” Whiskey is currently in his new habitat and getting to know his neighbor, Josie, who is also an African Serval.
Mowgli is a two-year-old ring-tailed lemur and a surrendered pet. His former owner took him to his local zoo in New Mexico and walked away. Mowgli is being flown into Chicago this week and then transported to his new home at Black Pine.
“We have had to turn away over 100 animals already this year. Currently, all our habitats are spoken for. Our maintenance staff, volunteers, and local contractors are always ready to build more habitats but is costly. It will be built once we have enough funding for a habitat.”
Two options to help with funding are happening in March. This Saturday, March 16, is the annual St. Catty’s Day. Black Pine Animal Sanctuary will be open from 1 to 4 pm, and visitors can wander the grounds. At the same time, the animals receive enrichment treats, and keepers chat about them.
General Admission rates apply.
On Friday, March 22, the Hubie Ashcraft Band, presented by Luke Funk Wealth Management, will perform at 7 pm at Sylvan Cellars Event Center in Rome City. There will also be a wine pull and auction. Tickets are just $20, and thanks to event sponsorship from 143 Berkley Marketing, Farmers Mutual Insurance of Noble Co, and US 93.3. 100% of the ticket sales, auction, and wine pull will go to Black Pine.
