ORIGINAL STORY:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne police say that alcohol and speed were factors in a crash that left a woman fighting for her life. Officials say it happened around 11:35 p.m. on Friday.

FWPD officials say that while engaged in OWI patrol, an officer running radar observed a vehicle going at an excessive rate of speed. He attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to stop. He lost sight of the car quickly and began termination of the pursuit around
Progress Rd. due to the excessive speed. The pursuit was less than 30 seconds.

That’s when calls began coming in about the accident less than one minute later of the pursuit termination.
Officers came up onto Washington Center Road as the calls were coming in. They advised the vehicle the officer had been chasing had crashed into another vehicle. A female was found pinned inside a vehicle on Washington Center and the male driver of the pursuit vehicle was taken into custody. That victim was taken from the scene to a local hospital. The doctor there said she had life-threatening injuries.

The FACT Team was paged out due to the severity of the injury and they began the process of gathering measurements and evidence to determine the cause of the crash.

Lima Rd and Washington Center were restricted and Washington Center westbound was closed at Lima. It remained so for the duration of the investigation, about two hours. Police do believe alcohol and excessive speed to be a factor in this incident.
