Hazmat situation at Allen Co. Jail sends 5 to the hospital

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department says that five people were taken from the Allen County Jail after a hazmat situation Tuesday afternoon. Calls began coming in around 5 p.m. after officers was doing a search of a cell and encountered a possible harmful substance.  Reportedly, smoke was coming from a toilet.

FWFD says they were dispatched a short time later on reports of a possible hazardous material incident.
Crews arrived and met with jail supervisors who stated there was a possible substance release causing issues in a cell. FWFD firefighters and Hazardous Materials Team members entered the Jail and removed five people from the structure. Their conditions were not immediately confirmed by officials.
All were transported to an area hospital for evaluations. The jail was checked and determined to be safe and returned to normal operations.
It is still unclear what the substance may have been or who was responsible for getting it into the jail.
Multiple agencies assisted in the incident including FWFD, FWPD, Allen County Police, Homeland Security and TRAA.
