The roots of skateboarding appear in the 1950s when surfers applied the idea of surfing to the streets. The first skateboards were simple, wooden planks with roller skate parts bolted to the bottom. By the 1960s, the first skateboard-specific manufacturers appeared as well as the first skateboarding contest. After this peak, popularity began to decline, but new advances in the urethane wheel in the early 1970s gave rise to a boom in the sport.

 

Trek the Trails 2022

Join the City of Fort Wayne, the City of New Haven, and Fort Wayne Trails on these family-friendly bike rides. Rides begin at 6:00 pm every Tuesday throughout the summer.  Participants are asked to wear helmets and bring water along for the ride. Most rides are 8-9 miles long. The average speed is 10-12 mph. This is a “no one left behind ride” and families are welcome.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Shakespeare’s love potion-fueled comedy gets the Youtheatre treatment in this hilarious and fast-paced 60 minute adaptation! In the forest, two young couples and an incompetent troupe of wanna-be actors get caught up in a battle of wits and wills between the fairy king and queen. Comic mix-ups and spells gone wrong make for an overly eventful night until “all is mended” as the curtain comes down. It’s sure to be a Dream come true as audiences of all ages discover the magic that’s enchanted theatergoers for over 400 years!

 

Botanical Conservatory- Mother’s Day Plant Sale

Just in time for spring planting, the Botanical Conservatory offers over 700 varieties of plants at the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale. Shop masses of locally grown herbs, vegetable starts, flowering perennials and native plants joining a host of annuals, mixed containers, hanging baskets, houseplants, bonsai and a variety of seeds. Essentials like potting soil and compost worms are also available. A team of knowledgeable plant advisors are even ready to answer questions and offer suggestions! This annual fundraiser supports Fort Wayne’s very own Botanical Conservatory.

 

FLEETWOOD GOLD: The Fleetwood Mac Experience

Although new on the scene, Fleetwood Gold immediately started selling out venues in 2021 and the band continues to reach larger audiences while solidifying a devoted fan base, acquiring more than 3,000 Facebook followers in about six months. In 2021 they sold out six theatre shows and drew from 1,000 to over 3,000 fans at summer events.

The Swinney house was built by Thomas and Lucy Swinney in 1844. At his death on January 20, 1875, Thomas’s will provided that when his direct line of issue expired, the homestead tract of 614 acres of land was to be used for a public park with the provision that his remaining children have lifetime occupancy of the house. The Swinney family occupied the Homestead until 1922. After that time, the Swinney’s house became the Museum of the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society. In 1980, after the Museum was relocated to the Old City Hall at Barr and Berry streets, Settlers leased and moved into the Swinney House and began teaching classes in a historical, elegant setting. As part of their mission, they also initiated the restoration of the house which is owned by the City of Fort Wayne.

Erik Vosteen will present Cookware from Local Clays: Making and Using Replica Native-Style Pottery. Learn about the lasting heritage of the Miami and other regional Native American groups. If you love beautiful sights and sounds, lovely scents, and the feeling of crushing something in your hand then this is the workshop for you! In these creative workshops, we will craft four different toys that stimulate the senses, relieve anxiety, and focus the mind. The sensory toys will include a squishy stress ball and aromatherapy play dough on Tuesday and a colorful kaleidoscope and expressive squishies on Thursday. This workshop is recommended for ages 8 and older and each kid is best to be accompanied by an adult. Toy instruction starts promptly at 6pm and 7pm. Through the generosity of the AWS Foundation, this program is made free to the public of all abilities.
