Arizona truck driver critically hurt in Toll Road crash dies

UPDATE (June 6, 2021):
Indiana State Police say that a man who was critically injured in a crash on the Toll Road has now died.
ISP officials released the following:

The critically injured driver, Michael S. Lohman, 53, of Glendale, Arizona, died late last night while undergoing surgery for his injuries sustained in the crash.

Mr. Lohman’s 12-year-old son was released from the LaGrange Parkview hospital and transported by Trooper Johnson over to Fort Wayne, and has now been reunited with his mother.

Further investigation has revealed that a primary cause of this crash is attributed to distracted driving (cellphone usage).

LAGRANGE CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana State Police say that just after 5:00 p.m. on Friday evening, troopers from the Indiana State Police (Toll Road Post) responded to multi-vehicle crash on the I-80/90 Toll Road near the 118mm, just west of Howe, IN. Arriving on scene the troopers found three commercial vehicles with heavy damage and debris strewn across the westbound lanes of the interstate, with all westbound traffic blocked.

Indiana State Police released the following:

Troopers quickly identified several persons as being injured, including one critically injured truck driver, Michael S. Lohman, 53, of Glendale, Arizona. Both of Lohman’s legs were severed, and he also suffered a severe head injury. Troopers applied tourniquets to both of Lohman’s legs in order to control bleeding prior to emergency medical personnel arriving. Lohman was flown from the scene by Parkview Samaritan helicopter to Fort Wayne for critical care. Lohman’s 12 year old son was a passenger in the semi-tractor, suffering minor injury. He was transported by ambulance to Parkview hospital in LaGrange for medical evaluation. A second truck driver, Ben M. Tehrani, 37, of Brentwood, California, sustained minor injury to his neck, and he was also transported by ambulance to Parkview in LaGrange for evaluation.

Trooper Brandon Johnson’s preliminary investigation revealed that at the time of the crash there was road construction traffic backup in the westbound lanes causing stopped or slowed traffic. Michael Lohman was driving a orange 2018 Kent semi-tractor trailer westbound approaching the stopped traffic, when he failed to stop and crashed into the rear of a yellow 2021 International (Penske) truck driven by Ben Tehrani. A third vehicle, a white 2013 Volvo semi-tractor trailer was also struck during the collision, but there was no injury to that driver, Elvis Maksuti, 36, of Waukegan, Illinois, only damage to the trailer unit.

Lohman was not wearing his seatbelt, but his passenger and the other drivers were all properly restrained.

This crash remains under investigation by an Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team. Once the crash investigation is complete, it is expected that the full report will be turned over to the LaGrange County Prosecutor for review and determination of any charges to be filed.

Trooper Johnson was assisted at the scene several troopers from the Toll Road Post, Parkview EMS, Howe Fire Department, Parkview Samaritan, Indiana Toll Road Maintenance personnel, Grate’s Wrecker Service, and several good Samaritan’s that stopped to render assistance.
