Beaches close, fish killed after Lake Michigan chemical spill

PORTAGE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A chemical spill into a river that feeds into Lake Michigan has forced the closure of several beaches at Indiana Dunes National ParkĀ in Portage, Indiana.

The chemical spill came from ArcelorMittal, a steel and mining company with a plant on the Little Calumet River. The accident released wastewater that contains high levels of ammonia and cyanide, killing hundreds of fish.
