IPFW names interim vice chancellor of communications, marketing

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Chancellor Ron Elsenbaumer has announced the appointment of Jerry Lewis as interim vice chancellor for communications and chief marketing officer for the university.

A seasoned communications and marketing professional, Lewis brings almost three decades of experience in strategic communications, marketing, and public affairs to the university as the institution continues with a realignment to become Purdue University Fort Wayne* during the coming months.

“Jerry is a respected, national leader in higher education marketing and communications. He has tremendous experience leading teams at both public and private institutions,” said Chancellor Elsenbaumer. “We had the opportunity to work together for seven years at The University of Texas at Arlington where I experienced firsthand his strategic, results-driven approach to promoting and advancing the institution. I am delighted to welcome him to campus and to Fort Wayne.”

Lewis served most recently as senior vice president for communications and public affairs at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. Prior to that, he served as vice president for communications at The University of Texas at Arlington in Arlington, Texas. Previously he served for 20 years in leadership positions at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. His portfolio included branding, marketing, communications, government and community affairs, events management, digital and social media, and crisis communications.

In this newly created position, Lewis will be responsible for leading the institution’s marketing and communications initiatives during a critical juncture as the university realigns from a merged Indiana University–Purdue University campus to become Purdue University Fort Wayne. The university is currently involved in a major rebranding effort with SME, a New York-based branding and marketing agency, and is focused on increasing enrollment, creating three new schools, ensuring a smooth transition with Indiana University, and building strong partnerships in the region and across the state.

A native of Damascus, Va, Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in communications at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. Under his leadership, the communications teams at Miami, Arlington, and Emory received more than 300 awards from the American Marketing Association, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and other professional organizations.

Lewis’s first day at the university was February 1.
