FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne Fire Department officials say that one person and two dogs were able to escape a house fire Tuesday morning that broke out just south of downtown.
The FWFD says that the fire broke out at 402 West Dewald Street close to Hoagland around 6:15 a.m.
It took crews around a half hour to knock down the flames and right now they are trying to figure out what caused the fire.
FWFD officials released the following:
FWFD units dispatched for a possible fire in the basement at 402 W Dewald St. Crews made entry finding active fire in the basement ceiling with it extending into the baseboards and flooring of the first floor. Fire was also found in the first floor walls but crews opened up the walls and flooring and stopped the fire from extending further through-out the house. 1 adult and 2 dogs were inside but escaped prior to FWFD arrival. Fire investigators are checking the scene for the cause. TRAA, FWPD, Neighborhood Code Enforcement, NIPSCO, and AEP all assisted on scene.
