FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Every January the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development identifies one day as the Point in Time Count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness throughout the United States. The Point in Time Count helps identify community-specific service needs and gaps, access additional funding and resources as well as increase public awareness of the challenges to ending homelessness.
Last year, The Rescue Mission provided more than 84,000 nights of safe shelter for those experiencing a homeless crisis. It is estimated that nearly 3,000 individuals in our community experience a homeless crisis. The Point in Time Count is important for community response to homelessness, and future programming provided across the community.
The Rescue Mission collects data on sheltered homeless individuals residing in the emergency shelter or transitional housing, through a Homeless Management Information System.
This Wednesday, January 25th from 7:30 AM – 6 PM, The Rescue Mission will participate in the Point in Time Count. Meals and incentives for participating will be provided. Community meals will be served at regular times.
