FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – For the third consecutive year, the Allen County Bar Foundation (ACBF) is offering law school scholarships for students with ties to Allen County, Indiana to support and advance diversity, equity and inclusion in the Allen County legal community.
The Allen County Bar Association released the following:
The scholarship will provide up to $2,500 to a law student for tuition and fees or for bar exam preparation and up to $1,500 for an undergraduate student preparing to take the Law School Admissions Test. This year, Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP and Stewart Richardson Deposition Services have generously contributed funds to the scholarship.
As noted in the December 2022 report by the Indiana Supreme Court’s Commission on Equity & Access in the Court System, “Many barriers impede the advancement and retention of diverse lawyers in the legal profession. Some of the factors that contribute to the lack of diversity include in-group favoritism, stereotyping, unconscious biases, and diversity fatigue. Other factors that contribute to the lack of diversity in the legal field are the socio-economic circumstances that often hinder people of color, including limited access to quality education and other resources, and the high cost of pursuing a legal degree.” The ACBF believes the Legal Opportunity Scholarship is one step toward improvement in this area.
“The Scholarship’s focus on diversity strengthens our community by broadening ethnic and cultural perspectives within a framework of tolerance and respect,” said Doug Powers, President of the Foundation.
The scholarship application is available on the ACBF’s website. The application period will be February 15 through March 31, 2024.
The ACBF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to promoting and engaging in the education of people in Allen County and Northeast Indiana about civics and the law by raising funds, creating programs and supporting organizations that share this vision. ACBF is a separate entity from the Allen County Bar Association and includes board members from the bench, the bar and the community.
