The following was released on Tuesday:
Late last night at approximately 11:48pm, troopers were dispatched to single vehicle crash in the area of Metz Road and 200 East, in Steuben County. Upon arrival first responders found a heavily damaged Volkswagen passenger vehicle on its top and an unresponsive adult male laying in the roadway.
Steuben County EMS arrived on scene and began life saving measures. The male was transported by ambulance from the scene to Cameron Memorial Hospital in Angola, where he was pronounced deceased.
Trooper Blake Kugler’s assumed the crash investigation. The preliminary investigation identified the deceased male as Alex James Loy, 29, of Hamilton, IN, and also confirmed Loy as the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. Mr. Loy had been traveling west on Metz Road just east of CR200E when his vehicle ran off the roadway causing it to rollover. Marks on the roadway indicated that the vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest on its top.
Evidence suggests that Mr. Loy was not properly restrained, which led to his ejection during the vehicle rollover. Alcohol is suspected as a being a factor, however toxicology results are pending with the coroner’s autopsy investigation.
Mr. Loy’s family has been notified.
This is an ongoing investigation. There is no further information to release at this time.
Trooper Kugler was assisted by the Steuben County Sheriffs Office, Angola Police Department, Angola Fire Department, Metz Fire Department, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County Coroner, and Countryside Towing.
