FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) crews stayed on the scene of a large fire in an industrial area through the overnight hours. Dark smoke was seen for miles, and witnesses reported hearing several explosions after the fire broke out at the Pontiac Tires facility at New Haven Avenue and Wayne Trace around 4:00 p.m.
By 4:30, the Fort Wayne Police Department sent a Public Safety Notice to avoid the area with significant traffic delays due to the fire.
They said the fire has caused “significant traffic delays.” A similar alert was pushed out at 7:48 p.m.
Despite the extremely warm temperatures and fire hydrant issues the FWFD was able to gain control of the fire which had spread to adjacent and connected buildings. No one was hurt in the fire, and the official cause is still under investigation.
The FWFD released the following:
At 1539 this afternoon, FWFD units were called to the mentioned address for a reported structure fire. Witnesses that were calling 911 stated there was heavy fire and smoke.
