INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – A bill to protect tenants in Indiana is being recommended for a summer study committee.
Senate Bill 202 would have required landlords to fix water or heat issues within 24 hours of a tenant’s report and hold rent payments until those fixes were made.
In a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday, the measure was gutted and amended, asking for the study committee to look into rent escrow programs for tenants.
That amended version of the bill will now go to the full Senate, but no longer includes the protections that were originally part of the measure.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana renters are pushing for their rights in a Statehouse rally as the state has the nation’s second-highest eviction rate behind New York.
People say they don’t have a voice in state government and dozens are urging lawmakers to pass protections for them to respond to issues with their homes.
A Merrillville woman says her rent is jumping from $898 to $1,365 a month, but she says issues with broken appliances, holes in walls, and leaks in her ceiling have not been addressed.
Two people who used to rent at Cheswick Village Apartments in Indianapolis say their homes were uninhabitable.
