FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne Community Schools will honor and celebrate Veterans Day with activities and events throughout the District.
Schools will honor veterans in their families, perform patriotic music and plant flags on the school grounds.
Week of Nov. 8
Memorial Park Middle School has a Yard Card posted on Maumee Avenue thanking veterans. Special morning announcements are made daily and students are learning more about Veterans Day in social studies classes.
Thursday, Nov. 11
Elementary Schools
At Abbett Elementary School student ambassadors will place 50 flags in front of the building to represent the 50 states defended by our veterans. Students and staff are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
Brentwood Elementary will celebrate with a flag ceremony at 1 p.m. Members of the 122nd Fighter Wing will conduct the ceremony at the flagpole outside of Brentwood. The ceremony will be live streamed so students inside can watch. Students are also encouraged to make thank you cards or write letters to veterans.
Croninger Elementary students will join in an all-school singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” at 2:30 p.m. Students will line the hallways, and family and friends who are veterans are invited to join and walk through the hallways as the students sing. Students and staff are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
Throughout the week, Fairfield Elementary students will write letters to veterans, read books about Veterans Day and work on patriotic projects and songs. Students and staff are encouraged to wear red, white and blue on Veterans Day when students will place flags in the school yard.
Irwin Elementary School will honor veterans in a program at 10 a.m. Prior to the program, veterans will be able to receive free haircuts, make overs, facials and manicures provided by JCPenney and Ravenscroft Beauty College beginning at 8:45 a.m. A hot, catered breakfast will be served at 9:15 a.m.
Students at Levan Scott Academy will wear red, white and blue. They will watch a video of their performances of patriotic songs.
Study Elementary School students and staff are creating an Honor Wall to recognize friends and family members who are veterans. The school’s walkway will be lined with flags, and students and staff are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
Waynedale Elementary students are bringing in pictures of family veterans to hang on the school’s honor wall. At 9 a.m., Student Council members will lead a flag-raising ceremony to be shown via Zoom to the rest of the school. Students are writing letters for veterans to be delivered to the local VFW post.
Weisser Park Elementary School will have a Veterans Day celebration at 9:15 a.m. featuring students’ loved ones who have served or are currently serving in the military.
High Schools
South Side High School students are invited to participate in a Veterans Day writing and art contest.
Wayne High School special education students will write and send encouraging letters to those serving in the military. Classes meet at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
