FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne Fire Department officials are using an overnight fire to remind residents that smoke detectors can save lives and residents can get free smoke detectors.
It comes after a fire nearly destroyed a mobile home on the 200 block of Country Forest Drive in the Countryside Village neighborhood.
Around 4:30 a.m., crews arrived to find flames con summing the front of the mobile home. At the time, five people had made it out. After getting control of the blaze firefighters learned that one of the residents had purchased smoke detectors but had not yet put them in.
FWFD officials are reminding residents to check their smoke detectors. Officials say that if you need smoke detectors and cannot afford them, contact 311.
The FWFD released the following regarding the overnight fire:
Firefighters responded to a reported mobile home fire at 241 Country Forest Drive early this morning. Firefighters arrived to find fire consuming the front portion of the home. Firefighters controlled the blaze in approximately 20 minutes. All occupants were home at the time of the fire and were able to self evacuate with no injuries. Once the fire was extinguished, FWFD fire investigators began their investigation, a cause was not released at the time of this report. The resident stated that he had just purchased new smoke detectors but had not installed them yet, no working smoke detectors were present in the home. Firefighters were assisted by FWPD, TRAA, NIPSCO, AEP, NCE. No injuries were reported at the fire but one firefighter did suffer a medical issue unrelated to the fire. He was treated at the scene and released. PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS AND REPLACE THEM IF THEY ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY.
