FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A home just south of downtown is damaged after an overnight fire.
Fort Wayne Fire Department officials say that six people made it out safely after flames broke out in the kitchen of an apartment on the second floor of a split home at 328 East Dewald Street just after midnight.
It took about 15 minutes but crews gained control of the fire.
Firefighters remained on the scene to make sure it had not spread to other parts of the building. The official cause is still under investigation.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department released the following:
FWFD units dispatched for a reported fire in an apartment. Crews arrived on scene finding a large 2-story house split into multiple apartments. Building had light smoke coming from second floor upon arrival. Crews determined which upstairs apartment had a fire and forced entry into this apartment finding fire in the kitchen area. Fire was extinguished and incident was quickly brought under control. Crews remained on scene to overhaul the building and check for any fire that may have extended into other areas of the building. AEP, NIPSCO, FWPD, TRAA, and Neighborhood Code Enforcement responded and assisted on scene.
