FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – It is safe to say that no one enjoys having to give up a pet. That said, Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control is reminding residents of the proper way to surrender an animal to its shelter.
Representatives with FWACC released the following:
FWACC understands that surrendering pets is a difficult decision and that sometimes resources or support is all one needs to keep pets with families. Part of Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control’s mission is to serve and help the community while working to keep pets in loving homes.
Before surrendering to the shelter, FWACC encourages owners to rehome their pets by using one of the following options:
Post your pet on Adopt-a-Pet
Reach out to friends or family
Ask your veterinarian, church, and local businesses if you can hang rehoming flyers
If all efforts to rehome have been made, FWACC will accept owned pets by appointment. Appointments allow for FWACC staff to find the best possible outcome while appropriately managing their daily animal population.
To schedule an appointment, please call 260 – 427-1244 option 1 between the hours of 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday – Friday.
If you live within Allen County, there are no fees to surrender your pet. Out of county residents will pay $25 for the first animal, and $10 for each additional animal.
According to city ordinance 91.026, abandoning animals outside the doors of FWACC, public or private premises structure, or any other location is illegal. Anyone who performs this act may be prosecuted.
