UPDATE (February 6, 2024):
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The University of Saint Francis community is in mourning after the death of student-athlete Jayden Morris this past weekend.
The 19-year-old has been identified as the victim in a shooting Saturday close to Lakeside Park. Two others were injured but are expected to recover.
The coroner determined Jayden died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
No arrests have been made and police did not name any suspects.
Interim President Dr. Lance Richey shares the university’s sympathy and prayers:
“The University of Saint Francis community is heartbroken with grief over the passing of Jayden Morris, a freshman and member of our football team. We offer our condolences to Jayden’s family and pray for them during this unimaginably difficult time. We also pray for, and offer our support to, the many teammates and friends who knew and loved Jayden. May Jayden rest in the love of our Heavenly Father, and all those who mourn him be comforted by God’s healing grace.”
Athletic Director Mike McCaffrey also expresses the grief felt within the athletic department and football program:
“On behalf of Coach Kevin Donley and our entire Cougars family, we are deeply saddened by the events over the weekend that took student-athlete Jayden Morris from us. Jayden was a bright light with an infectious personality that could bring joy to any room. Our prayers are with his mother, Natasha, and the rest of his loved ones. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by a campus community that cares deeply for one another and can help each other during such a difficult time.”
The Allen County Coroner’s Office released the following regarding Jayden’s death:
On Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, the Allen County Coroner’s Office was notified of a shooting in the 1200 block of Rivermet Avenue, in Fort Wayne. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The victim was identified as Jayden Lamont Morris, 19 years of age, male, Black of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Notification has been made to the legal next of kin and an autopsy has been completed. The Cause of Death is Multiple Gunshot Wounds and the Manner of Death is Homicide.
Jayden Lamont Morris is the 6th homicide for Allen County in Fort Wayne.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – One man has been killed in a shooting near downtown Fort Wayne just before midnight Saturday. Two other men were injured in the shooting in the 1200 block of Rivermet Avenue.
There are currently no suspects. Anyone with any information is asked to contact police. The two men who were hurt suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The FWPD released the following:
On February 3rd, 2024 at approximately 11:40pm, the Fort Wayne Police Department received calls reporting gunshots in the 1200 block of Rivermet Avenue close to Lakeside Park.
Officers arrived and located three persons suffering from apparent gunshot wound(s) at the rear of a residence. Paramedics arrived and pronounced a male victim deceased and transported two other male victims to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
At this time, it is unknown what led to the shooting. Detectives are currently canvasing the area, looking for any evidence or video surveillance. Crime Scene technicians are searching for and processing any evidence.
There are currently no suspects. Anyone with any information is asked to contact police.
This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
