On 04/28/2024 just be 3:00 pm, Steuben County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of SR 1 and Hamilton Lake Ln 101 near Clark’s Landing in rural Otsego Township for a report of a motorcycle crash. When deputies first arrived, they found a motorcycle off of the roadway near the intersection adjacent to a single male rider who appeared to have a head injury.
Initial crash scene investigation indicated that 60-year-old Steven D. Hartsock failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway at the intersection of SR 1 and Hamilton Lake Ln 101 due to the high rate of speed.
Hartsock then laid the motorcycle down on the roadway causing to slide off the west side of SR 1 and overturned. Hartsock was thrown from the motorcycle during the crash and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Hartsock was flown from the scene to a Fort Wayne area hospital in serious condition by the Samaritan helicopter. The weather was clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the crash. At this time, alcohol isn’t believed to be involved in the crash.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were Steuben County EMS, Hamilton Fire, Hamilton Police, and the Angola Police. The crash still remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
