FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – If you use Facebook Marketplace to sell things in Fort Wayne the FWPD has a warning for you.
The Fort Wayne Police Department says it has gotten word of people using fake money in deals made on the site.
Police say that counterfeit money will have “For motion picture use only” printed on it.
And it isn’t until the alleged buyer is gone that the seller realizes that the money is not real.
The FWPD released the following:
Fort Wayne Police are warning the public about a scam going around that involves “a rash of counterfeit bills” exchanged in sales through Facebook Marketplace. Police have gotten reports from victims who tried to sell items through Facebook and the “buyer” would meet them and pay with bills marked “For motion picture use only.”
The Fort Wayne Police Department would like to warn the public about a rash of counterfeit bills that have been passed in the community. It’s a seller beware situation. The victims are selling items on Facebook Marketplace and the “buyer” meets them and pays with bills that are clearly marked “FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY”. The buyer will then suddenly leave, either by vehicle or by going to a locked apartment complex that entry must be made with a code and the seller doesn’t realize the money is bad until it’s too late. Please examine the money before a transaction occurs and the item that is being sold is given to the suspect.
