FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Amidst an uptick in cases of vaccine-preventable diseases in our community, Humane Fort Wayne is sounding the alarm and encouraging all pet owners to ensure that their four-legged companions are current on all recommended vaccinations and preventatives.
“As our community’s most comprehensive animal welfare organization, we are very concerned,” says Jessica Henry, Humane Fort Wayne’s Executive Director. ”
Humane Fort Wayne representatives released the following:
In recent weeks we’ve seen a substantial increase in the number of pets in our community suffering from highly contagious and potentially fatal illnesses such as Feline Panleukopenia, Canine Parvovirus and Leptospirosis – all of which are completely preventable with simple vaccines.”
Sadly, this uptick comes at a time when the veterinary industry, both nationwide and right here in Fort Wayne, is experiencing unprecedented staff shortages. Many veterinary practices are unable to accept new patients and it can be difficult to get a regular wellness appointment in a timely manner. And in light of the current economy, many pet owners are being forced to choose between gas, groceries, and keeping their animals healthy.
“The best method to help prevent highly contagious and life-threatening diseases is proper vaccination,” said Dr. Samantha Gamble, one of Humane Fort Wayne’s staff veterinarians. “At Humane Fort Wayne, our goal is to help care for and protect our animal friends. We are in this together – now more than ever.”
Humane Fort Wayne is recommending that pet owners reach out to their primary veterinarian as soon as possible to ensure that their animals are up-to-date on all recommended vaccines.
