FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne police say that a woman is in serious condition following a shooting on the city’s southwest side Thursday afternoon.
Officers responded to Illinois Road and I-69 just before 2 p.m. after a woman was reported inside an SUV with gunshot wounds.
The incident sparked a large law enforcement presence and snarled traffic along Illinois Road.
Police believe she was shot during a disturbance that began at Preston Point apartments and ended with the woman being shot by someone in another vehicle on Illinois Road.
The Fort Wayne Police Department is asking for anyone who may have information regarding either of these incidents or may have been in the area of Illinois Road & I-69 at the time of the shooting is asked to contact the Fort Wayne Police Department Detective Bureau.
FWPD officials released the following:
On Thursday August 11, 2022 at approximately 1:45 PM, officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the area of Illinois Road & I-69 in reference to a shooting investigation. As officers and paramedics arrived on the scene, they located an adult female victim inside a vehicle suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Paramedics provided medical attention to the female victim before transporting her to a local hospital where she was listed with non-life threatening injuries.
Officers on the scene believe that this incident may possibly be related to a disturbance that was called into dispatch at approximately 1:30 PM outside an apartment located in the 1500 block of Fenwick Place. Officers on the scene of the disturbance advised that there were several individuals that were involved in some type of altercation prior to officer’s arrival. Investigators believe that the victim was shot by occupants inside another vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Illinois Road.
At this time, officers are on the scene of the shooting processing the scene and collecting evidence. The Fort Wayne Police Department is asking for anyone who may have information regarding either of these incidents or may have been in the area of Illinois Road & I-69 at the time of the shooting is asked to contact the Fort Wayne Police Department Detective Bureau at 260-427-1201.
